FSA Claims Submissions Blackouts Announced

piggybank2NTEU is urging the Office of Personal Management (OPM) to shorten a one-month blackout period for Flexible Spending Account (FSAFEDS) reimbursement claims. From July 30 through Sept. 1, the 350,000 federal employees who participate in FSAFEDS will not be able to submit claims while a new administrator transitions to take over the program in September.

National President Tony Reardon voiced concerns about the impact of the lengthy blackout on federal employees. “Many have reoccurring costs, such as child care, and rely on that reimbursement to meet their other financial obligations,” he said in a letter to OPM Acting Director Beth Colbert.

The letter calls for shorter blackout periods and suggests an advanced payment option or skipping deductions as ways to decrease the burden federal employees and their families will face.
