Congress Passes One-Week Continuing Resolution
Congress has passed a short-term funding measure to keep the government open through Friday, May 5. The president is expected to sign the stopgap bill before funding expires at midnight.
House and Senate negotiators are set to work through next week to finalize a longer-term deal that would fund the government through the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year.
NTEU is pleased that federal employees will be able to continue working to fulfill their critical agency missions, but this remains an anxious time as uncertainty about agency funding extends for yet another week. As the budget debate continues, NTEU is urging Congress and the administration to pass a long-term spending bill that provides federal agencies with adequate resources so employees can do their important work for the country.
NTEU worked closely with lawmakers to protect federal employees in the event of a shutdown. The union supports legislation in the House and Senate that would ensure all federal workers are paid as quickly as possible should a shutdown occur, regardless of whether they are furloughed or required to work unpaid.
