Retirees
More for you now. More for your future
NTEU Legislated Protections
- Blocked continued attempts to eliminate or reduce retiree COLAs.
- Protected the "HIGH 3" annuity computation formula against repeated attempts to replace it with a "HIGH 5" formula.
- Working towards repeat and/or relaxation of the Social Security windfall reduction and spousal offset which result in unfair benefits reductions for public employees.
- Repeatedly blocked efforts which result in unfair benefits reductions for public employees.
- Repeatedly blocked efforts to raise the federal retirement age from 55 to 65.
- Continues to stress that federal retirees must not lose health care benefits they now have, or pay higher premiums, as a result of any health care reform legislation that is adopted.
NTEU Litigated Protections
- Won restoration of COLAs by challenging the Gramm-Rudman Act. Following NTEU's lawsuit, the Supreme Court fuled the automatic elimination of federal retiree COLAs to be unconstitutional.
- Suing for back pay for special rate employees who were denied annual pay adjustments between 1982 and 1988. The lawsuit also affects any retirees who worked during those years and were classified as "special rate."
- Won back overtime pay, plus liquidated damages or interest, for IRS Revenue Officers, Tax Auditors, and Taxpayer Service Specialists who worked overtime as a GS-9, Step 5 or higher between July 1981 and April 1993. This remedy was available to retired ROs, TAs and TSSs.
